What business software does my business need?

Making a decision on what business software is good for your business is one of the hardest decision a business can make. Not only is any software implementation going to be a financial and time investment but you are going to be bound to your decision for many years to come.

Firstly you need to rate your operations

Most of our frustrations in operations is focused on the elements in our businesses that are relatively foreign to us. It is these foreign elements that due to factors like simply not having enough experience cause distress. This too often drives the decisions on what business software to purchase to “magically” fix or automate these processes.

This however is definitely not the first place to start when looking at software. Take you operations and rate each of the processes you perform very often and work out the average time that these processes take. The by analyzing this list work out the items that will save you the most time, in areas that you have great experience and where there is software solutions to improve and automate sections of this work and focus there. By improving your “day to day” operations you are freed up to focus on the more challenging areas of your business.

Then as you grow and gain more experience you keep performing this analysis of your business and extend your business management software into these areas.

Next time I am going to write about how to get an understanding of what your “business as usual” is. Only once you have a full understanding of this will you know how to improve and more importantly know how to gauge if you are being successful or now.
